NEC Opens WiMAX IOT Center in Taiwan

Following through on the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed between NEC and Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs in May 2007 at the Taiwan WiMAX Summit, Japanese NEC announced the inauguration of a new R&D center for WiMAX systems in Taiwan on June 10, Taiwan's UDN (United Daily News) reported. According to the same report, NEC plans to inject around NT$ 20 million (US$657,981; US$1=NT$30.4) into the new facility initially. Total investment is expected to increase exponentially with the expansion of business.
The new facility, as part of the agreement signed by NEC in support of the Taiwanese government's M-Taiwan project, will initially carry out IOT (Interoperability Testing) for Taiwanese CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) providers and NEC's WiMAX system PasoWings, according to the UDN report. NEC also expects the facility to eventually become a WiMAX application R&D center to help accelerate the commercialization of WiMAX devices.
